Battle of Carrhae 53 BC
Marcus Crassus is probably best known for putting down the Spartacus slave revolt and for Carrhae.

The Parthian general Surena decisively defeated a Roman invasion force under the command of Marcus Licinius Crassus, who died at the battle. It is commonly seen as one of the earliest and most important battles between the Roman and Parthian Empires and one of the most crushing defeats in Roman history.
Crassus, a member of the First Triumvirate and the wealthiest man in Rome, had been enticed by the prospect of military glory and riches and decided to invade Parthia without the official consent of the Senate. Rejecting an offer from the Armenian King Artavasdes II to allow Crassus to invade Parthia via Armenia, Crassus marched his army directly through the deserts of Mesopotamia. His forces clashed with Surena's troops near Carrhae. Surena's cavalry killed or captured most of the Roman soldiers. Crassus himself was killed when truce negotiations turned violent.

Today I wanted to take a closer look at the common narrative that Crassus was a bumbling idiot who caused the disaster of Carrhae. What was he thinking! Today we will attempt to reconstruct his chain of decisions to determine if they really were misguided.
As a reference for this rehabilitation of Crassus, I recommend the book "Defeat of Rome in the East: Crassus, the Parthians, and the Disastrous Battle of Carrhae, 53 BC" by Gareth C Sampson

In 54 BC Crassus launched Rome's first campaign against the Parthians only to face disastrous defeat at the battle of Carrhae. This humiliation required Roman vengeance. The campaigns that followed would become the opening salvos of the Roman-Parthian wars!

Time to take on the "Battle of Carrhae" historical scenario for Rome Total War on "Very Hard" difficulty. This is my 2nd attempt. In my first attempt, I let my legionaries hold their ground, and get mass-routed by the initial cataphract charge. |
