I do not like this time of the year! Here in the Seattle area our days are pretty short. On Dec 20th, the sun will rise at 7:54 AM and set at 4:20 PM, giving us only 8 hours, 25 minutes of daylight! I like June better! On June 21st we get 15 hours, 59 minutes of daylight.

It could be worse! The entire month of December is dark in places like Barrow, Alaska. In Fairbanks, they have only 3 hours, 41 minutes of daylight on Dec 20th and 21st.

In Europe this time of year is known as Daylight Saving Time
as between end of October and March the Clocks are set back an hour.

The idea in the UK dates back to 1917 WW1 and Munition factories
oil lamps and saving oil (and oil being in short supply then thanks to the U-boats sinking Tankers).

Germany introduced it in 1980 to save power & fuel after the 1979
oil crisis.

In more modern times in the UK due to Scottish sheep farmers
wanting dawn daylight in the AM.

(one advantage of Scottish Independence is they could
move to their own Timezone)

For most people, they would rather some daylight at the end of day
as dark in the morning & dark in evening does lead to a mental
condition known as Seasonal Attitude Distress (SAD) or
a sort of cabin fever, if you will.

Also the change back to setting the clocks forward in March
can be brutal and people struggle with the change
as it disrupts biorhythms.

Europe voted to abolish Daylight Saving Time by 2021
and it was expected to be gone this year.

Things like Covid & Brexit sort of got in the way and the
necessary prep work hasn't been done.

So all the EU back to Daylight saving again this Winter
for the hopefully last time ever and move to
ECT European Central Time next winter.
(GMT +1 plus timezone differences)

And leave it to me that my region's 4 months of warm is spent on my computer or doing whatever else inside the house. And in a blink of an eye the summer's gone and i could only wish i had the chance again to go out. And repeat the same next summer, of course

We can't go anywhere this year. We are locked down. The wife and I like to go cruising but they are all cancelled. If you want to go to Hawaii you have to jump thru hoops and get special testing. Arizona is too locked down for us. So, we are just stuck here in the Seattle area in the dark and wet, cool weather.
