Installing and Using Windows 11 on a 10 year old PC

This uses official MS packages on a fresh install in a computer from 2012 with zero modifications! We only use official microsoft commands.

EDIT:

Windows 11 does included a 10-day rollback to previous OS version
if this is an Upgrade
Rollback is buried in the Settings App

Reportedly Win 10 Systems with TPM enabled are getting
Microsoft Windows 11 upgrade pop-ups appearing

(Keeping TPM disabled in The BIOS until you wish to upgrade
is one way to avoid these Microsoft Upgrade pop-ups)

Windows 11 Review

IGN

Windows 11 is finally here. The update brings a fresh new design, visual changes throughout the interface, and widgets for glanceable news, weather and other handy information. But is it worth upgrading right away?

Windows 11 review: Microsoft’s most pleasant OS—until it isn't

Windows 11 seemed to come out of nowhere, and while it brings a host of aesthetic improvements and some performance changes under the hood, it feels like a minor update in the scheme of OS upgrades. Some of the changes here, a redesigned store, DirectStorage for faster game loading, and a cleaned up interface, are appreciated, but to get there you have to wade through a complicated install/upgrade process that has us wondering whether the hassle is worth it.

Windows 11 has been officially out since October 5th, and there’s a lot to talk about here.

Microsoft is already (in)famous for their “good-bad-good” reputation with operating systems, where a good release will be followed by a not so great one, followed by another good one.

I feel like Windows 11 has the potential of breaking the cycle by being the second good OS in a row by Microsoft, but it’s going to take additional work! Personally, I think that Windows 11 brings some refreshing changes to the table, but in its current state, it is all but finished.

(assuming windows 10 is considered a good OS version.
frankly, No
too much broken or doesn't work or not tested at all.

Windows 8.1 has been better for the entire duration of Windows 10
and 8.1 had some original brain dead decisions by Microsoft.
11 is just a late shiny 10 with even more apparent lack of testing.

Windows 7 was just a version of Vista that sort of worked more often than it failed, and often the least worse option.

For windows XP considered as a good OS - IDE raid controllers
and you would never consider it good!)

Linux fanboy reviews Windows 11

Installing Windows is still a very simple process if you just want to reformat your drive. While a lot of the install process still looks like what it did in the Vista days, it's relatively straightforward, I must say. It doesn't look amazing, it definitely doesn't really handle as many things as most Linux installers, but it works.

Although it lets you only reinstall just the system WITHOUT needing a separate partition for your user files. That's something we could take inspiration from.

The config screens that come next are really much better than what we usually get in Linux installers. These screens are clean, super simple and enticing, and very reassuring.

These constant loading times and reboots and restarts and "please wait" screens are pretty jarring and don't make for a super nice setup experience.

Unfortunately, unless you remove internet access to your device, there is no setting up a computer without a MS Account, which is very annoying. Then, you get to the multiple screens where you'll decide how much you want to restrict MS Data collection, knowing full well you can't completely stop it.

Now I gotta say, out of the box, Windows 11 is shiny. I also like the customization options, with the dark mode and accent colors. But these aren't picked up everywhere in the system. Some right click menus don't use them, the file manager doesn't use it either, that's where it all starts to crumble, basically.

Basically, everytime I get out of one of MS's revamped default apps, and go to something from the Windows 95 era, I get this horrendous disconnect. It's incredible to me that this isn't fixed yet. They've had the whole lifecycle of Windows 10 to fix it and replace these panels and interfaces with modern components.

The desktop itself is pretty simple, though. The new menu is nice, if you don't like using your mouse to navigate. Because objectively, the list of apps is worse if you're a mouse user. Search is much better and quicker to find something anyways, than to try and navigate nested menus. It was time to move to this way of using a menu, and it's well done.

Of course, you STILL get these terrible ads.

I also liked the fact that you get touchpad gestures on a laptop, although these aren't 1:1 and just trigger in the middle of a swipe, so they're not as good as what we get on GNOME or elementary OS on Linux.

I kinda like the Teams integration out of the box. In general, I don't think the default experience on Windows 11 is bad. It looks good, it's smooth and well animated. The default apps do their job well, **unless you're a privacy nerd like me**, and using the system is pretty simple. Simpler than on WIndows 10, i'd say.

The only real issue is that once you dive any further than one or 2 levels of an app, you realize it's just another coat of paint on top of Windows XP.

Now let's talk about the appStore experience. This new MS Store has progressed VERY nicely compared to what I remember from WIndows 10.

Here, it's basically 10% of what you'd want, and the rest is either shady, paid-for redistributions of open source applications without any respect for branding or trademarks, for example LibreOffice, or it's just not available.

But for now, it's not enough, and you still have to go hunt for .exe files and install them manually like a caveman, without any centralized way to manage updates to these.

Block Upgrade To Windows 11
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rCl3MMY9Lg

Block Upgrade To Windows 11

A lot of people don't want to update Windows 10 to Windows 11 and the certainly don't want to be bombarded with pop ups trying to trick or force them into upgrading to Windows 11 from Windows 10.

Lately Microsoft have started to force tricky ads about getting a free upgrade to Windows 11 and you have to decline or you run the risk of starting the Windows 11 upgrade process off. I will show you step by step on block and disabling these forced upgrade ads by Microsoft.

Open registry and navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

Add DWORD (32-bit) Value TargetReleaseVersion and give it a value data of 1

Then add a String Value called TargetReleaseVersionInfo and give it the version of Windows you want to stay on example 21H2

You can also set group policy if you are running Windows 10 Pro and above

Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Update / Windows Update for Business

Double-click on Select the target Feature Update version in the right panel

Enable the feature

Version = Windows 10
Target Version for Feature Updates = 21H2 or version you want to stay on.

Now restart computer.

Windows 11 System Restore Is Breaking Apps, Says Microsoft

https://www.forbes.com/sites/barrycollins/2023/01/19/windows-11-system-restore-is-breaking-apps-says-microsoft/

Jan 19, 2023

...
Microsoft has admitted that a bug in the latest version of Windows 11 could cause apps to fail if the customer performs a System Restore.

a bug in Windows 11 version 22H2 – the latest major release – is causing apps to break.

Microsoft’s bug report states that users may see a “this app can’t open” message when they attempt to open apps, or that it simply won’t respond. The app might also have multiple entries on the Start menu or may crash when opened.

In some scenarios, the app may start to work normally if you simply attempt to re-open the app after the initial failure.

Microsoft hasn’t produced an exhaustive list of apps that are affected by this bug, but among the programs affected are major pieces of software including Microsoft Office, Notepad, Paint and the Terminal.

Microsoft states that any Windows app using the MSIX Windows app package format is likely to be affected.

Microsoft has suggested reinstalling the app from the Windows Store or the source from where it was first installed. Running Windows Update may also solve the problem.

In the meantime, it may be best to avoid performing a System Restore, as it seems to be causing more problems than it solves!

Warning exercise Extreme Caution

A google search on say
Force Windows 11 Install

Checkout the Github entry in the search results

Quote:
This tool creates a modified Windows 11 installer ISO using an existing one, containing a registry hack that bypasses the setup-time compatibility checks, as well as an experimental patch that forces feature updates and in-place upgrades to install, ignoring incompatibilities.

Modifies Windows 11 installation ISO to bypass compatibility checks both pre and post installation
force the installer to skip TPM, Secure Boot, memory and CPU checks
(new install from the modified ISO required, it will not modify
an existing OS install)

(your system has to be in the Windows 11 ball park as regards
performance, memory & hard disk space, Graphics Card etc)

Windows 11 is a 64-bit-only OS

Use at your own risk (so no direct link)
Expect Microsoft to respond to this exploit, whenever.

So if you have aging unsupported hardware
(i.e. Lacks TPM, Secure boot & Wrong CPU etc)
and due for replacement.
Treat your self to a new Windows 11 supported PC
with the OS pre-installed, may be the best easiest option
at a cost

The above is something you need to test for yourself
on a Spare PC or on an empty Hard drive,
Not on your regular system or hard drive.

Windows 10 is supported with Microsoft security updates
until October 2025

-------------------------

I was curious was this a trivial script new install installer fix
which it apparently pretty much is

Windows 12 expected Fall/Winter 2024 TBC
Windows 11 was released on Oct. 5, 2021
Windows 10 was originally released back in 2015
Windows 8 was originally released back in 2012 (8.1 was a free upgrade)
Windows 7 was originally released back in 2009 (10 a free update from 7/8.1)

with all the various free OS upgrades and
lack of new PC sales due to Lockdowns etc.
Microsoft needs to make some money out of you again
(yet appear to still offer a free OS upgrade but actually not...)
and encourage some new PC System sales by whatever means necessary
with new OS license fees

Time to look again at Linux running Windows games
in emulation
or maybe consider a Win 7/10 PC Games Rig solely for gaming
or a Playstation/Xbox
Wait for Windows 12 is always an option for a new PC system then

Was talking to someone recently about Corporate Takeup Levels
of the Windows 11 OS

The response was essentially:

Windows 11 problems with Corporates - None

As no one to their knowledge is using it,
they are all effectively still on Windows 10 Site licenses

No one knowns if any software actually works with Windows 11
so easier to stay with Windows 10 as more of a known issue
(Anyway 11 is just a tweaked late release of 10 that they already have)

So windows 11 is more currently a Consumer User OS

Windows 11 get tested by all the Users that actually install it.
Microsoft no doubt, thanks you for your service.
