OK, here goes:
1. You get an FPK Packer/Unpacker.
2. You get an image format transformer.
3. You unpack the game's FPK archives.
4. You find the ships' textures. The extension of the files is .dds.
5. OK, to make things a lot easier I give you the list of the files you gonna need.
(possibly in an attachment - unable to access)
6. You transform the .dds files into some other format, which you know you can edit. One important thing - you will need a fomat which support transparency for the file which has the word "transparent" in its name.
7. You edit the files (textures). And I hope you've got the right tools and skills to do that.
8. You transform your textures back to .dds format.
9. You place your .dds files into the "custom" folder. You might also want to pack them into an FPK archive for convenience and style once you are totally happy with them before you place them into the folder. And it is a good thing to do if you're planning to post your mod here or elsewhere.
10. You can also pack your new files back into appropriate FPKs of the game if you're not planning to alter them much further and are planning to use them all the time.
