Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew took bitter defeat and turned it into heroic survival.Early this century, members of the imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition watched as their ship, the Endurance was crushed by the frozen sea. They were left with no radio and no hope of rescue. For more than a year, they drifted on packed ice, surviving on seal, penguin, and eventually dog meat, while battling freezing temperatures and mind-numbing boredom. When Shackleton, along with all 28 members of the expedition, emerged at Stromness whaling station in May, 1916, almost two years after their departure, the world was shocked.

Retracing Shackleton's Epic Journey of Survival -- Tim Jarvis

the story of the expedition led by Tim Jarvis to authentically recreate the perilous journey of survival that Sir Ernest Shackleton had to take in 1916 when his polar expedition was thwarted after his boat was trapped in the ice. Tim Jarvis and his team of 5 saled the 800 nautical miles from Elephant Island to South Georgia in a replica of Shackleton's keel-less whaling boat and then climbed for three days over the dangerous mountains using the same inadequate equipment that Shackleton and his men had to use.

Frank Wild and the Shackleton Expedition: Yorkshire's Polar Hero
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnce5qQWPdM

Yorkshire's Hidden History
1 Jun 2020

You've probably heard of Robert Scott. You *might* have heard that Captain Oates, the one who went outside and "may be some time", has a plaque in Leeds. But unless you're a real polar buff, you probably haven't heard of Frank Wild - the Yorkshireman who played a crucial role in one of the greatest stories of endurance through adversity. He isn't even on the Wikipedia list of famous/important people from Yorkshire.

This isn't aimed at being a complete biography; rather it's just a few highlights from his role in Shackleton's expedition, and his full story is almost too big to make a video about.

Frank Wild's ashes were laid to rest on November 27, 2011, at Grytviken, South Georgia Island, next to the grave of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. The burial was preceded by a funeral service at Grytviken Anglican Church, attended by Shackleton's granddaughter Alexandra, Wild's descendants, and passengers from the Akademik Ioffe.

Grytviken Abandoned Whaling Station Where Ernest Shackleton is Buried

An abandoned whaling station at a port called Grytviken, South Georgia where the noted Ernest Shackleton is buried. His ship, the Endurance was trapped in the Antarctic ice pack where he and his crew suffered extreme hardships.

Grytviken is the whaling station made famous by Shackleton's reunion with civilization on the South Georgia and Sandwich Islands after losing his ship, the Endurance, to Antarctic pack ice in 1915.

You can see his grave site in a small cemetery overlooking the bay. Although the grave of Ernest Shackleton can be found in the little graveyard here, Grytviken is not the whaling station where he finally found help after his epic journey but rather at the nearby Stromness whaling station.

Conservators with the Antarctic Heritage Trust talk about their work at the historic 1908 Shackleton hut at Cape Royds in Antarctica. Video by Mary Lynn Price, WomenInAntarctica.com. Built 100 years ago in 1908 as part of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition, the hut is filled with the effects and furnishings from that "heroic era" expedition. Because of the hard work and diligence of the Trust, the hut and its historic contents have been restored for future generations of visitors and scholars to enjoy, learn from and be inspired by. Here's a video of Trust conservators talking about their work on location at the Shackleton hut. Hope you enjoy it! MLP

Tom Crean: Why haven't I heard about this man before!?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6nap9KqXhI

Adventure Breaks

The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration was a period spanning from around 1900 to 1920. Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Sir Earnest Shackleton, and Roald Amundsen became household names during this period. However, there's an incredible story of someone you've almost certainly never heard of.

This man's strength and determination helped saved the lives of 28 men stranded in Antarctic after their ship, The Endurance, was crushed by ice. On another expedition, he saved the lives of two other men that would have died without his brave actions. He was one of the last people to see polar explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott alive, after he perished on his return journey from the South Pole. Later that same year, he helped to find Scott's body and buried him in the ice. He spent more time on the ice than Scott or Shackleton.

His brother was shot dead, and he risked the same fate if he spoke about his exploits. As such, he took his stories to the grave, not even telling his daughters about his time in Antarctica.

His name was Tom Crean. And today, you can hear his story. Click to watch "Why haven't I heard about this man before!?".

Endurance: Shackleton's lost ship is found in Antarctic
https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-60662541

9 March 2022

The wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship has been found 106 years after it sank into the icy waters of the Antarctic.

Endurance was found at a depth of 3,008 metres and approximately four miles south of the position originally recorded by the ship’s captain, Frank Worsley

Link to some footage of the wreck on the webpage
The ship is in an amazing state of preservation, condition
apart from ice crush damage at the time of sinking in 1915.
