ref: error message that says "Read beyond end of file."
What game FPK file is this ?
May be Pak tool and game FPK compatibility issue,
Try a different tool if available
Also ensure you use a scratch folder with full rights,
Last resort, Try run as administrator
For SM pirates
Fpk Unpacker & PakBuild are the unpacking tools
Fpk Unpacker & Civ4 PakBuild
http://www.hookedonpirates.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7904
Fpk Unpacker typically works better for SM Pirates
as there are User created mod FPKs that PakBuild will fail to unpack
such as for example Rupertlittlebear's Parrot mod
& MCSmarties's - Brethren of the Coast Mod
(incorrectly initially recalled this as the original East Indies Mod)
For Civ4
Fpk Unpacker ?, PakBuild & Dragon Unpacker
(not sure how Fpk Unpacker will behave with Civ4 Fpks
and PakBuild may be CIV preferred)
PakBuild is the official Fraxis unpack tool
(see above link)
Dragon Unpacker
(Open Source)

Supported Games

Includes
Game Name
Extension
Plugin Version
Plugin in DUP5
Included Support Level
Civilization 4 .FPK drv_default 2.0.0 5.2.0 Full
Civilization V .FPK drv_default 2.1.0 5.6.0 Full
SM Pirates not listed
(FPK is supposed to be the same archive format as used for CIV4
(contents layout & version numbers may differ)
but I could never get this to work for SM pirates previously
and is not listed as supported)

Well that's probably the problem. I was trying to unpack a modded FPK from Civ IV. I'll see if Dragon can do it.
So the FPKs of Civ IV and Pirates aren't necessarily compatible?
Going into the holidays so I won't have as much time to mess with files on my computer. But I'll see what I can pull around the New Year. |

REF: So the FPKs of Civ IV and Pirates aren't necessarily compatible?
My guess
is that the official Fraxis FPKs & PakBuild
probably are compatible.
Fpk Unpacker can also unpack Fraxis official SM pirates FPKs
The official Fraxis CIV4 PakBuild tool
is the one apparently most used for CIV4
(usually the tool listed to be used in
various Civ Fan forum threads)
Any User created SM pirates mod FPKs
using a 3rd part tool such as say Fpk Unpacker
may need to be unpacked with the same creation tool
(It helps if mods state what Tool was used
in the mod description or readme file.
otherwise assume Fpk Unpacker, as typically has best
results for SM pirates)
FPK archive format is very much a Civ 4 file format.
Because Fraxis had this tech to hand, they also used it
for SM pirates.
(I would not be at all surprised if there are file header differences
or some such between the games at a guess.
Never bothered using a Hex Editor to find out
So I tend to be wary of any stated claims that FPKs are
the same between SM Pirates & Civ 4 games,
unless proven by testing first)

I had a little brain fart here. The "caravel.nif" IS the model file, and the .dds is the skin. That's what the holidays do to your memory! So these two together will make the complete junk. I have not tried putting it in Pirates yet. Do ship files in Pirates also consist of just a .nif and a .dds? |

Wow nice work. I think it's just a .nif? I'm looking now but can't find the file I was using for parksbanyon's proa to replace the war canoe/pinnace model, I think it's tartane.nif or something like that. Then there's a tartane.dds but I think that's just for the icon that shows up when you're looking at your fleet.
To be even more fulsome, you can replace the Pirate-o-Pedia dds and also go into the text file to rewrite the entry for the ship, as we did for the East Indies. But anyway great stuff, keep us posted if you make any progress |

Parksbanyon - Proa Z30.nif
Quote:
Also the proa.nif, rename tartane.nif and dump in ur custom
if I remember the textures are the same one used by the tartane.
----------------------
Looking at the caravel.nif as a Text File
caravel.nif
Gamebryo File Format, Version 20.0.0.4
should instead be for SM Pirates
Gamebryo File Format, Version 10.1.0.0
caravel.nif
includes this
Mass = 0.000000
Ellasticity = 0.300000
Friction = 0.300000
Unyielding = 0
Phantom = 0
Simulation_Geometry = 2
Proxy_Geometry = <None>
Use_Display_Proxy = 0
Disable_Collisions = 0
Inactive = 0
Display_Proxy = <None>
which is not present in a SM pirates NIF
May possibly need to run it through say Nifskope or
Blender & Blender Nif Scripts
Other Users may be better able to advise on this
https://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/Blender
NifSkope
http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/NifSkope
A graphical program that allows you to open NIF files, view their contents, edit them, and write them back out again. You can use it to quickly make changes to specific properties of a NIF file such as changing the texture, adding translucency, and more.
A 3D view of the contents of the NIF file allows you to preview your changes instantly. You can even create texture templates, and import & export OBJ files.
