inspired by the Sid Meir's Pirates! computer game
The Golden Age of Piracy - 1718 is an old school style tactical solitaire board game of action and adventure, with a bit of wargame and RPG elements mixed in. An open-ended sandbox style game where the pirate captain may choose his own path.
Set in the Caribbean Islands during the year 1718, as a pirate captain, you will attempt to build your wealth by attacking merchant ships and selling their goods, by attacking and pillaging towns, kidnapping or assassinating a town governor or his daughter, gambling in a tavern, and by recovering buried treasure from acquired maps.
Game components include navigation maps, various mats, a tables book, and a counter sheet representing individual ships, etc.
The player moves his pirate ship's game counter across the Caribbean map, traveling around and searching for merchant ships to take attack, visiting the pirate town of Nassau to buy and sell goods, plus repair the ship. The player may also construct a hidden pirate haven where he may store stolen goods and booty, plus repair his ship at no cost.
The ultimate goal of the game is to save up enough booty in order to buy your pardon before the Royal Navy invades Nassau. Will you succeed, or be hanged for piracy?

Pirate Hunter: 1718 is an old-school style tactical solitaire board game of action and adventure, with a bit of wargame and RPG elements mixed in. An open-ended sandbox style game where you, as a warship captain, may choose your own path.
Set in the Caribbean Islands during the year 1718, as a privateer warship captain hired by the governor of Port Royal, you will be tasked with hunting down dastardly pirates that are disrupting the shipping industry in the Caribbean, with your ultimate goal being to attack and shut down the notorious pirate town of Nassau. But it's not all work and no play. In your free time, you might decide to also gamble in a tavern, or even attempt to recover buried treasure from acquired maps. Whatever path you choose, no two games will ever play the same.

The Golden Age of Piracy: 1718 vs. Pirate Hunter: 1718

Are "The Golden Age of Piracy: 1718" and "Pirate Hunter: 1718" two versions of the same game or two different games?
Both are available on Wargame Vault. What are the differences?

It's basically the same game, just the goals are different.
Pirate Hunter 1718: "Besides hunting down and arresting pirates, your ultimate goal is to attack and shut down the pirate town of Nassau."
Golden Age of Piracy 1718: "The ultimate goal of your Pirate Captain is to save up enough gold from acts of piracy to earn a King’s Pardon through bribery".
If you own both, you can decide whether you are the good guys or the bad guys.

Both titles use the same game engine and play similarly. However, there are many differences.
In GAOP, you play as the captain of a pirate ship, where you and your crew attack merchant ships, raid towns, attempt to recover buried treasure, build a hidden pirate haven, take hostages for ransom, etc.
And in PH, you play as the captain of a warship hired by the Royal Navy where you and your crew hunt down pirate ships, raid pirate havens, and ultimately attempt to raid and shut down the pirate town of Nassau.
I would also say that GOAP is a more difficult game to survive than PH- but neither is 'easy'. Overall, PH is a bit less complex compared to GOAP due to having less tables. But both are easy to learn and play.
There are too many other differences between the two to list here, but I think you get the idea. Both titles offer a good challenge and lots of player choices.
Also be aware that both games have a LOT of content and detail, which provides a deep experience and good replay value.
I guess it all comes down to which captain you want to play as. Perhaps both? |
