Best known as the author of one of the most important sourcebooks of 17th-century piracy, History of the Buccaneers of America, first published in 1678.

In 1666, an indentured servant for the next three years at Tortuga.

Later enlisted with the buccaneers, in particular with the band of Henry Morgan, whose confidante he was, probably as a barber-surgeon, and remained with them until 1674

Shortly afterwards Exquemelin returned to Europe and settled
in Amsterdam where he qualified professionally as a surgeon.

However, he was later once again in the Caribbean as his name
appears on the muster-roll as a surgeon in the attack on Cartagena
in 1697.

Bernard Desjean, Baron de Pointis, French Navy, commanded an
attack, plundering Cartagena.

The buccaneers made a second attack on Cartagena,
unhappy with the amount of loot from the first attack.

Following publication of the English translation in 1684 of
History of the Buccaneers of America,
Henry Morgan took steps to discredit the book and
successfully brought a libel suit against the book's publishers.

Henry Morgan is probably one of the best-known Buccaneers, because of Exquemelin's book.

It is thought Exquemelin bore a grudge over what he saw was
Morgan's theft of the bounty from the Raid on Panama.
Morgan is apparently portrayed as a cruel and unscrupulous villain
in the book.
