Many years before the existence of the United States of America
was the Untied States of Spain,
a group of provinces that expanded over a half of the north American territory, California, Oregón, Nevada, Idaho, Colorado, Nuevo México, Kansas, Montana, Florida, Alabama, Arizona, Texas.
The Mississippi and even Alaska were Spanish territories with a wide variety of names, Nueva Vizcaya, Nuevo León, Nuevo Santander, Nueva Navarra, Nueva Extremadura.

On this day in 1780, a large convoy of British ships is captured,
headed toward the West Indies

The victory was the result of a combined French and Spanish effort, led by Spanish Admiral Luis de Córdova y Córdova.

Córdova y Córdova captured most of the convoy—at least 55 ships, along with the soldiers, seamen, and cargo on board. The cost to the British was estimated at 1.5 million pounds.

It would prove to be one of the largest naval captures in history!
