With the revolution and all that's happening down there, every time I hear the capital Port-au-Prince metioned/being threatened, I can't help but think, " Give me a sloop and 40 men and I can put a French governor there in no time."
Perhaps a little insensitive but no other computer game seems to have contributed to my knowledge of geography as much.
Did Pirates! affect you this way ? What other games did you learn unintentionally learn from ? |

I can say all dealing with (or pretending to be) with real life/history.
Medieval: Total War, Sea Dogs, Cutthroats, Pirates!, Patrician III to name a few.
My like of reading feeds me with modding ideas and my addict of gaming leads me to further reading. A guaranteed way to put on weight!
But then, I'm that type of crazy guy reading an entire encyclopedia volume by volume going to bed. OK, I confess... I skip the articles about bacteriae etc.

Pirates! gave me an smooth idea of the caribbian,
Port Royale refreshed it.
Patrician gave me an impression about the Hanse-league and the main-Cities belonging to that. _________________ Don't consider a creation to beeing perfect, unless you sat on it from dusk till dawn |

There have been a number of games that I have learned from. I guess most of them are historic in nature, but some like Pirates! are geographical.
Pirates! (of course)
Civilization
Colonization
Defender of the Crown
Centurion: Defender of Rome

Police Quest showed me that police don't always just go around shooting criminals.
Transport Tycoon Deluxe has some maps that I later realised where from certain parts of the world.
High Seas Trader had a good world map in it.
Street Rod taught me a bit about cars.
And yeah the map for Pirates! showed me what the Carribean was. |

I once worked with a woman from Nevis. She was amazed because I was the only person who knew where it was. When I mentioned Antigua and St. Kitts, she nearly died. How did I know these places? you guessed it... Pirates!

Now that would of been fun
Sounds like when I was talking to a girl that works at the same place I am from and she and her family is from Trinidad I was like wow really ... Then I got into the history of Trinidad and she says its quite a beautiful area and is always busy. She was very impressed how much i knew about Trinidad. |

It's like reading Don Rosa's Donald Duck stories... I've learned tons of history from them (he writes 99% historical correct stories, just on a rare occasion he bend a little bit on the truth, but it's still not far from it...) _________________ Once a pirate, always a pirate!
