Hooked on Stronghold opened! |
|
We've just opened the fourth site in the Hooked Gamers network; Hooked on Stronghold. It'll be the last for a while, first we want to take some time to mature the current sites and make sure they're all running as they should.
Obviously the game was released recently, which makes this site a little unusual for us. We like to have some time to look forward to the game. It didn't work out that way this time around, but that shouldn't spoil the fun!
A new addition to the site is the Stronghold Ladder in which you can compete against other Stronghold players online, and climb the ladder to the top, or at least stuggle towards that end. Should be cool.
So, join us at Hooked on Stronghold and help form a great new community around what should become a big multiplayer hit.

2K Games acquires Pirates! |
|
A member of our forum, Civrules, popped in with news that might excite all us scurvy pirates. Apparently, Atari is no longer in the picture and Firaxis is now teamed up with 2K Games at least as far as Pirates and Civ are concerned. A quote from the press release:
2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), and FIRAXIS Games announced today the acquisition of publishing rights to Sid Meier's Pirates!. Pirates! for the Xbox® video game system from Microsoft will be released by 2K Games this summer. Also included in this expanded partnership between 2K Games and FIRAXIS Games are publishing rights to the previously released PC version of Sid Meier's Pirates!.

New Hookedon site: Hooked on Age of Pirates |
|
After some really interesting (and sometimes frustrating) design and site build adventures on this one, we've officially opened Hooked on Age of Pirates!
It will be hard to unlearn typing the exclamation mark behind the word Pirates, but it'll be worth it. So please join us on this new voyage. We hope that it will become the #1 destination for Akella's amazing looking game, but of course we can't do it without you.
Enjoy!

Pirates Xbox 61 new screenshots |
|
More news on the Xbox line of Pirates! Civrules dug around and found out that Worthplaying has published 61 new screenshots of the Xbox version of the game. Here be the link.
Personally, I don't see much there that us PC owners should feel envious about, but I'm sure those with an Xbox will have a blast with this one.

Xbox Pirates! interview |
|
CVG met up with Mr Meier and team to give Xbox Pirates! a spin and talk to Sid about the upcoming console conversion of the game. I think I have missed this little fact, but when I read it just now, I nearly fell off my chair:
The game won't be playable over Xbox Live though, which is understandable. "This is a story about a single player," explains Meier. "To have Live play would have diluted that experience. It's such a rich world spanning so many genres and meaning so much to so many fans, we thought it best to tell the story of this pirate and do that to the best of our ability. This is our first console title, the Xbox is the best console for the job, and we want to nail it."
I don't know about you, but what's the value of multiplayer if you can't play it online? *sigh*
Another quote from the article is interesting though:
"The only way we could do Pirates! Live is to make it an MMORPG," Briggs says, which begs the question of whether we could be seeing Pirates! 2 on what the Firaxis team keeps referring to as Xenon (aka Xbox 2). "It's speculation, but yes," says Briggs, "it's certainly a possibility."

Xbox Pirates! |
|
As we're getting closer to the Xbox release of Sid's Pirates!, previews are popping up all over the Net.
One of the first to do a proper article, is IGN. Here's a blurb about the multiplayer aspects:
The major changes for the Xbox range all over the map. First, Firaxis worked in a four-player ship battle that's ridiculously fun. You can play with just two humans and add in enemy AI ships, or three humans an one enemy AI. In the battles we played, the AI is inhumanly good; and we think they might get tempered a wee bit before the game ships in late May. You can ram ships, and attack using various kinds of cannons, in addition to changing your speed. You'll get bonus powerups, too, such as health, attack, defense, and speed.
GamesDomain adds some more juicy stuff to the above:
Prior to the actual boarding, the Xbox version of Pirates! will present players with a brief reflex/puzzle challenge. If the player does well, he automatically reduces the defenders' deck-strength, and is rewarded with a showy movie-worthy entrance, slashing the sails with his sword and "riding the rip" dramatically to the deck. If he does poorly, he face-plants as soon as he sets foot on deck.
A lot of this stuff will probably be way to arcadish for most of the PC version fans but I must admit I'm starting to feel left out in the cold by Firaxis. We deserve to have a choice wether we want to play online, or just offline.
